DEFINITIONS OF INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY

There are four types of Intellectual Property, the intangible creations of human intellect that are protected by law

  • TRADE SECRETS protect information including technical and business information such as formulas, processes, customer lists. Protected by laws in all 50 States.
  • COPYRIGHTS protect literary and artistic works such as books, papers, photographs, art, music, movies, recordings, and software. Copyrights may be Federally Registered.
  • TRADEMARKS are symbols, including words, letters, slogans, designs, or shapes that identify a product or service. Trademarks may or may not be federally registered.
  • PATENTS are grants issued by a government office, such as USPTO, that gives its owner the right to exclude others from making, using, or selling the invention where the laws of that government are enforced.
